One nonprofit fundraising organization gave both a face and a story to its recent fundraising campaign.
Earlier this year, the YMCA of Greater New York sent one freelance journalist to Haiti to interview several Haitian teenagers that the organization had chosen to bring to a New York summer camp, the Chronicle of Philanthropy writes.
Over ten weeks, the organization was able to raise $30,000 - enough to send 10 campers to Huguenot, New York. In order to attract donorsr, the chapter posted short biographies beside photographs of the teens on its website and Facebook page.
Because of its efforts, young people, such as 14-year-old Vanessa Vellard, will get to spend time in New York visiting museums and meeting new people. She told the paper that she's excited and looks forward to she can "come back and teach my friends here."
The national YMCA organization recently went under an image makeover, announcing that it will officially known now by its nickname - the Y - in an effort to connect with a younger demographic.
