Paradigm

Were you aware that the nightly tape backup performed on your server may not be backing up the Paradigm database?

Paradigm uses a SQL server engine: Sybase SQL Anywhere. All SQL database engines attach to the database file and have exclusive rights to this file whenever the Paradigm Service is running. Any attempt to access the Paradigm database file for the purpose of copying or backing up the file is therefore prevented.

Within a Windows 2000 or XP server/workstation installation, you can create two batch files, utilizing the “Net Stop” and “Net Start” commands. These files will stop the Paradigm Service while the tape backup is running on the server and then restart the service when the backup has completed.

Additionally, you can automate the Paradigm Backup to hard disk utility using the SQLANYWHERE "dbbackup" command. This utility is executed in conjunction with the Scheduled Tasks Service available in Windows.
